Plumbing Safety Tips Before Going Out On A Vacation

safetyEveryone needs a vacation to unwind and leave the troubles of the monotonous routine they have to deal with every day. Whether you’re relaxing at the beach, travelling to new places, or visiting your folks from afar, you need to make sure your home is secured, especially the plumbing system. You don’t want to be greeted with floods and broken plumbing fixtures after arriving from your holiday, so check out these plumbing safety tips before going to your well-earned vacation.

Keeping your Water Heater Safe

Before leaving your house for a long time, be sure to inspect the tank of your water heater for any possible damage, rusts, and leaks. If any of these are present, ask help from an expert plumber in your area to fix the tank before your vacation date. Being too careful should be exercised, so turn off the water heater prior to your time off. In shutting down the water heater, always close the main power before shutting the valves off. However, after your vacation, turning the heating system will be the exact opposite: the tank valves are opened first then the power.

Gone for Weeks or Months?

If you won’t be in your house for a weeks or months then you should really consider turning off the main water supply. Shutting down the main valve will prevent water from coming inside the plumbing system of your house. This is highly recommended since you’ll never know what happens with the plumbing fixtures and pipe lining in your house: a pipe might give in and cause floods or tap ware might continually drip after it has become worn. Even if your vacation is just a few days, you need to turn off the main valve just to be on the safe side.

Sump Pump Should be Up-and- Running

A sump pump drains the rainwater in the basement which makes it a fundamental plumbing system in any household. You need to make sure that the sump pump is functioning well and that it has a backup battery in case the power fails. The sump pump is even more important when your vacation schedule is during rainy season, since there won’t be anyone to supervise your house unless you have a family or friend who will be staying.

Don’t Forget to Shut Down the Water Supply Outside

The faucets and other plumbing fixtures outside your home should also have its water supply cut off. Some of you might have a predicament on who will water the plants. You can just ask a reliable neighbor, friend or relative to nourish the plants for you.

Stop Drain Odors from Happening

A dry drain can often be the source of awful odors so make sure to moisturize the drain or add a drain maintenance cleaning product before leaving. Also, if you plan to purchase the drain maintenance product, choose those that are safe to use and doesn’t contain any harmful chemicals as it can damage your drains.
